Mrs. Huya honored with "Golden Apple Award"
OLC kindergarten teacher Maureen Huya is this week's Gold Apple Award winner. The award, sponsored by WJET TV and Edinboro University, recognizes excellent teachers from throughout the region.
After 38 years of teaching kindergartners, it takes a lot to leave Mrs. Huya speechless. But that’s just what happened when she was surprised with the award on Oct. 21. Visiting KA to present the award was Dr. Jeremy Brown, President of Edinboro University, who applauded Mrs. Huya’s dedication, enthusiasm and longevity. Dr. Brown also spoke at a student assembly held in Mrs. Huya's honor.
Mrs. Huya was nominated by sixth-grade student Sullivan Johnson. He wrote:
"I still love and admire Mrs. Huya. She helped give me the values I use in every day life. She is committed to everything she teaches, or does. I think that Mrs. Huya, if anyone, deserves the Golden Apple Award. For she is the epitome of what life is all about.
