What we're learning

In fifth grade, the language arts classes write and illustrate a 28-page children’s book. Fifth-grade authors read their books to the students in grades K-3. In addition to their books, students will create an author card to distribute after they have read their books.

Fifth graders also work in literature circles (small discussion groups) whose members have chosen to read the same story, poem, article or novel. The novels the students select are integrated with our social studies unit on Canada. Upon completion of their novels, each literature circle selects a culminating project to highlight what they learned and loved about the book.

In math, we study fractions and problem solving and keep a math journal. We work on a survey that we convert into graphs. Our surveys cover such things as favorite sports and favorite foods.

In Mrs. Donnelly’s Science class, we take advantage of the nice weather to go outside and study trees and the weather. We work on science projects for the Science Fair. In health classes, students learn to recognize and resist the pressures that may influence them to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, inhalants or other drugs in our "Here’s Looking at You" curriculum. We will also learn how violence impacts everyone.
