OLCS Raider Players Theatre Group
After witnessing the play “Once Upon This Island” at Mercyhurst Prep, one question continued – why does OLCS not have a theatre program? After asking the middle school students about performing a play, it was found that the students wanted this opportunity as well. The OLCS Raider Players Theatre Group was formed to fill a void at Our Lady’s Christian School.
We chose for our first performance a play called “High School (non) Musical” written by Jonathan Dorf. The play is a comedic spoof of the Disney hit “High School Musical.” This play is very intricate with a focus on characters over play stage area – something that fit with OLCS. Because of the advanced vocabulary used in the character lines, only 5th-8th grade students were invited to audition for parts. All of the costume designs, set designs, playbill, and lighting/sound designs were created by the students making this a truly student-centered performance.
This play is the springboard for things to come. This was not intended as a one-time only event, but a way to bring an actual theatre program to Our Lady’s Christian School. It is our mission to make this a part of OLCS’ list of activities for students. The theater is a great way for students to express themselves creatively. Next year we are planning to do two performances – one in the fall and one in the spring. We also hope to open up the group to students in the younger grades as well. This year’s performance with the major scene construction and finances with provide us with the tools to make this a reality for years to come.
We hope you will join us for this year’s performance to support this program for our students!
